a firefighter. three-alarm fire. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran was the first reporter on the scene and spoke with the homeowner about some daring rescue attempts. she joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: i spoke with the two people in the house. it was a father and son. and thank goodness the smoke alarms went off. they had a second security system that called them and asked them if they were okay so they were well prepared for this fire. you want to look at this damage now. the call came in around 3:15 this morning as a brush fire and half the house was in flames when firefighters got here on scene. they say the flames were up to 30 feet high. vallejo fire department had to call in extra support from american canyon, fairfield and cordelia. because of that, they were able to tackle it quickly and able to fight it offensively meaning go inside the house and because of that, they were able to salvage some of the valuables inside. now, as it stands, firefighters were in there. you can see them they're all on the second floor. what they are doing now is looking for hotspots to make sure i

>>> you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news in high- definition. >>> good evening. we begin with breaking news. it is slow-going traffic on highway 101 in the peninsula following a shooting. a crash involving an apparent shooting victim was reported in the southbound lane. around 3:30 this afternoon. this is near the holly street exit in san carlos. the car was seen swerving before it went off of the highway. several lanes remain blocked. investigators are not sure when they will reopen the highway. >>> also happening right now, crews are searching for fisherman lost at sea after their boat capsized. it happened at pigeon point. now, just south of pascedaro. we have more on what happened and the latest on the search, john? >> reporter: as we under stand it, at 5:30 this morning, four men in a boat at candlestick marina, headed out from the golden gate, two miles of pigeon point. at that point, something happened. a rogue wave hit the boat and knocked four men into the water. two of them were wearing life vests and two were not. the sheriff's sergeant john gonzalez has more.
:00. firefighters are still on the scene of a duplex fire in berkeley which started nearly five hours ago. >> cbs 5 reporter anne makovec has been following this developing story. this is a complicated fire for the crews to fight. >> reporter: yes. and one of the large problems that they had to deal with overnight is that there are other homes so close by as you can see here. ben venue avenue is still closed down and will be for several hours after this fire in a duplex. five people lived in that building all of them were able to get out safely. but you can see how spectacular the fire was from some of these pictures we found on the website for the daily cal. the fire broke out just after midnight. of the five people that were in the home, one woman was in a wheelchair. she had to be helped out by police. but again, no injuries to report. homes around the building had to be evacuated because firefighters were afraid that this was going to spread. those people have since been allowed back in after part of the home that was initially the source of this fire collapsed. >> so during the firefight there
